The meaning: "Heuristic Algorithm"

The Origin of the Name: According www.mygeneration.org it is letters that precede IBM. (See Table)

However, in the sequel "2010", Arthur C. Clarke, the original author, emphatically denies that HAL's name is supposed to be "one step ahead of IBM". It is, rather, short for "heuristic algorithm".
